The Port of Oakland is contemplating a potential alteration to the airport’s name, proposing to rename it as San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport instead of its present official designation, the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK). However, it’s important to note that the airport code OAK and its visual branding will remain unchanged.<\/p>\n

“The Port is considering a name modification to boost inbound travelers\u2019 geographic awareness of the airport\u2019s location on the San Francisco Bay.\u201d Port Commission President Barbara Leslie also said, \u201cThis will protect our airport’s over 30,000 good-paying, direct jobs and $1.6 billion in economic impact on the region.”<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Oakland International Airport (OAK) also enjoys robust backing from its airline collaborators.<\/p>\n

\u201cOakland helped put us on the map in California and we\u2019re wholeheartedly supportive of this rebranding that acknowledges OAK\u2019s economic position and influence in the San Francisco Bay area while staying true to its Oakland roots,\u201d said Jennifer Bridie, Vice President of Marketing Communications & Strategy at Southwest Airlines.<\/p>\n

Local travelers often provide feedback to OAK, expressing their desire for greater accessibility to direct flights, both domestically and internationally.<\/p>\n

\u201cMarket research and interviews with airline partners have shown that routes have not performed as well as they should have due to the lack of geographic awareness, making air carriers reluctant to sustain and add new routes in Oakland,\u201d said Port of Oakland Interim Director of Aviation Craig Simon. \u201cFrom July 2008 to March 2024, the Airport added 54 new routes; 39 of these and 6 pre-existing destinations were lost.\u201d<\/p>\n

As part of a comprehensive endeavor to enhance the passenger experience at OAK, efforts include renovating the Terminal 1 check-in lobby, improving restroom facilities, and introducing new local concessions and dining options.<\/p>\n

The Port Commissioners will review the proposed name change for the airport during their Port Board meeting on April 11, 2024. After the Commission makes its decision, the staff will initiate the formal renaming process. This involves collaboration with airlines, other airports, and local agencies to ensure the modification is accurately reflected in airport and airline systems.<\/p>\n
