Azul TecOps, a division of Azul launched in April 2023 to offer maintenance services, expertise, and technical knowledge to different organizations, has received certification from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) enabling it to provide aircraft and component maintenance services to companies within the European Union.
The certification, which is valid for two years with an option for renewal, was achieved through a bilateral agreement between Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac) and EASA. This agreement aims to streamline the approval process for maintenance organizations by reducing duplication in certification and surveillance efforts.
Flávio Costa, Azul’s Technical Vice President, noted that the certification process involved developing a manual that complies with both Brazilian regulations and EASA’s specific criteria. Additionally, the process included training for over 750 members of the Azul Crew across technical, support, and administrative roles. “We underwent numerous internal audits to validate our procedures. Our team engaged in extensive preparation, analysis, demonstrations, and training over the months,” Costa stated.
Costa also noted that with operational knowledge and technical know-how resulting from more than 15 years of history and with a diverse fleet, Azul TecOps now takes its expertise abroad. “The services that were previously offered only to Brazilian operators can now be offered throughout the European Union, which represents not only the possibility of capturing new customers but also a huge potential for revenue generation,” Flávio Costa states. “The EASA approval is an endorsement of the quality and excellence of our services,” he adds.
Azul’s primary maintenance facility, located near Viracopos airport in Campinas, is the largest hangar in Latin America at 35,000 square meters and is celebrating four years of operation. It boasts the capacity for three heavy maintenance lines, one modification line, and two lines for special stops across all Azul fleet models. The site also features numerous workshops for a range of services, including engine borescopy, aircraft weighing, and more, making it a comprehensive maintenance hub.
Furthermore, EASA’s certification extends to Azul’s maintenance operations in Belo Horizonte at Pampulha airport. Here, Azul operates additional hangars and workshops across over 14,000 square meters, accommodating ATR, Embraer 195 E1, Boeing, and Pilatus aircraft. This facility provides five lines for heavy maintenance, special stops, and preservation, underscoring Azul’s expansive maintenance capabilities.
