Today, the organization overseeing New York City’s tourism and convention efforts announced a significant leadership change. Fred Dixon will depart from his position as President and CEO in June to assume a new role as the head of Brand USA, the United States’ official marketing entity aimed at enhancing its reputation as a leading travel destination. His tenure in the new role commences in July.

Nancy Mammana, the current Chief Marketing Officer for NYC Tourism + Conventions, steps up as the Interim CEO. Since joining the team in 2018 and serving as CMO for five years, Mammana has spearheaded the organization’s 2023 rebranding efforts. Her responsibilities encompass a broad range of strategies that impact the entire city, spanning domestic and international marketing, media relations, digital outreach, creative direction, event planning, partnerships, licensing, and the expansion of global tourism.

Dixon’s leadership will conclude on June 5, and the search for his successor is underway, led by a dedicated committee.

His leadership and expertise created a template for excellence in destination marketing and the team of talented individuals who make the work possible. We are thrilled beyond measure for him in this new role and know that he will always be a champion for NYC.”  

Under Dixon’s leadership, New York City has fortified its status as a leading global destination for travelers, thereby significantly contributing to the local economy. The city welcomed over 62 million visitors in 2023, who collectively contributed more than $74 billion to the economic landscape and supported upwards of 380,000 jobs in the leisure and hospitality sector. Looking ahead to 2025, the city anticipates hosting more than 68 million visitors, surpassing pre-COVID-19 visitor numbers and setting the stage for future growth. Noteworthy upcoming events include America250 and the FIFA World Cup 26, with Dixon playing a key role in securing the rights to host the latter after a six-year bidding campaign.

Since joining the organization in 2005 and ascending to CEO in 2014, Dixon has leveraged his three decades of experience in the travel industry to enhance the city’s appeal to both business and leisure travelers worldwide. His efforts have led to a doubling in international visitation, with over 13 million travelers recorded, achieved through a strategic expansion of New York City’s global presence across 17 international markets and nearly 40 locations worldwide.

During the initial stages of the pandemic, Dixon was instrumental in forming the Coalition for NYC Hospitality and Tourism Recovery, uniting industry leaders to devise a recovery plan. In July 2020, the coalition, in partnership with NYC Tourism + Conventions, unveiled a comprehensive recovery strategy, supported by a $30 million investment from the city.

Dixon’s contributions extend beyond his immediate roles, as he holds leadership positions within various travel and tourism boards, including serving as the current Chair of Destinations International and holding seats on several other influential boards and committees within the industry.
